Insurance and coverage

Will your insurance pay for treatment in China?

Search your plan and get an evidence-based verdict in seconds — built from public insurer documents, not sales promises. This is research information, not insurance advice.

Independent patient coordination. Zero markup on your hospital bill. Not medical advice.

Type at least two characters. We match insurer brands and exact plan names.

Our verdicts describe what public documents show. They are not a coverage decision, a payment guarantee or an interpretation of your contract. Only your insurer can confirm your individual eligibility.

Key findings — release R295

What 874 products actually show

The picture is less generous than the marketing suggests.

17 of 874

publish a complete public hospital list for China

Only 1.9% of the international products we researched tell you, publicly, which hospitals in China they will pay.

29%

of network hospitals sit in just two cities

Shanghai and Beijing dominate every published network. If your treatment is elsewhere, check the list carefully.

1 in 10

products explicitly exclude mainland China

Not reduced benefits — excluded outright. It is better to learn this now than after you book a flight.

Where insurer networks reach in China

Dot size is the number of verified hospital relationships. 163 cities and 187 brands in total.

What this means for you. If your treatment is in Shanghai or Beijing, most published networks will have an option. If it is in Chengdu, Wuhan or Changsha, assume nothing — send us the plan and we will check the specific hospital lists.

The honest landscape

All 874 products grouped by what their public documents actually say about China. The largest group is not a refusal — it is an absence of a list.

"Worldwide" describes the covered area, not a hospital network.

Methodology

How we verify coverage

Four rules that decide whether a product gets a favourable verdict.

Public evidence only

We read plan documents, policy wordings, published hospital directories and regulator filings. We do not use sales brochures or call-centre answers.

Legal-entity binding

A hospital list published by a regional subsidiary only counts for policies issued by that entity. Brand names are not coverage.

No inheritance

Coverage is not inherited from a group plan, an employer scheme or a sister product. Each plan is assessed on its own documents.

Graded confidence

Every verdict carries an evidence grade and a data cut-off date, so you can see how firm the conclusion is.

Get your full coverage report

Tell us where to send it and we will email a PDF report on your exact plan — hospital list, payment route, restrictions and the pre-authorisation steps.

One report, no spam, unsubscribe any time. We never sell your email address.

Questions patients actually ask

What is direct billing, exactly?

Direct billing means the hospital invoices your insurer instead of you, under a pre-agreed network rate. You pay only any deductible, co-insurance or non-covered items.

Only 17 of the 874 products we researched publish a complete public hospital list for China.

What is a guarantee of payment?

A GOP is a document your insurer sends the hospital confirming it will pay for a specific, pre-authorised treatment. The hospital can then treat you without demanding a deposit.

It is case-by-case, so it takes time. Start the application two to four weeks before your planned travel date rather than the week you fly.

My plan says worldwide coverage. Why is that not a yes?

Because "worldwide" describes the covered geographic area, not a hospital network. A plan can cover the whole world and still have no hospital in China it will settle with directly.

In that case the treatment may well be reimbursable — you simply pay first and claim afterwards.

Why will you not just show me the full hospital list?

The database is our own research asset, assembled over several years from public documents. We share the complete picture in a personalised report matched to your exact plan, rather than publishing a table our competitors can copy.

We do tell you, free and immediately, whether public evidence exists and what the payment route is likely to be.

Is this insurance advice?

No. We are not an insurance broker or adviser, and we do not sell policies. What we publish is research into what insurers have said publicly about China.

Only your insurer can confirm your individual eligibility, and only in writing.

My insurer is not listed. Can you still help?

Often, yes. Group and corporate plans are frequently undocumented in public, which is why they do not appear in our research. Send us the insurer, the plan name and your certificate number, and we will research it against the same standards.

Found your verdict?

Send us the written answer from your insurer and we will match you to hospitals that can work with that specific payment route.
